Located in Astoria, this one and a half story wood frame house, built in 1922, is a charming reminder of another period. The owners wanted to use the attic space more effectively and to add a new powder room in the space. In order to accomplish this work, the existing narrow stair had to be removed and redesigned to elegantly move vertically from cellar to attic. Given the tight spatial constraints and code requirements, this proved to be a significant design challenge. The ground floor bathroom was also enlarged to create a more generous main bathroom with clean marble tiles and a warm wood vanity. The stair was exactly designed and dimensioned and carefully placed in the existing location with merely inches of tolerance. The final result is a fluid circulation spine connecting all floors and two new bathrooms.
