Located in historic Sunnyside Gardens, this interior renovation of a 25’ x 28’ house built in 1927 involved reconfiguring the existing two family layout into a one family house with three bedrooms, kitchen, three bathrooms and a powder room. The ground floor living room was enlarged providing visual access to the stair to the second floor. With its new entry vestibule and roof skylight, the stair now creates a dramatic vertical light-filled sequence to the second floor. A new fireplace was added on the main floor and the galley kitchen reconfigured into an open kitchen dining area. The rear porch, previously bricked, was restored to a 1940’s traditional wood porch with casement windows to provide a generous view of the garden. The clients imported many items from Bali which were incorporated into the design, including door frames and lanterns. The main challenge was to create a contemporary home in a historic container while also integrating all the unique decorative objects into a harmonious series of spaces.
