Cooper Square Hallways

Manhattan, New York

Program: Lobby and Hallway Renovations
Area: 10,000sf
Status: Completed 2021

This existing 14 story senior affordable housing building located adjacent to Cooper Square in Manhattan required upgrades to its lobby, hallways and rooftop access.  JASA (Jewish Association Serving the Aging), one of New York’s largest non-profit agencies serving older adults in New York City, hired Heim Architect to complete a study for installing new railings in the hallway to assist their residences.  The scope of work was then expanded to include a complete re-envisioning of the circulation spaces.  The hallways have alternating accent colors, blue and gray, and at each floor wayfinding is improved with bold floor numbers, color, and a unique New York themed art piece.  The first move was to define three zones: arrival, movement, view.  The flooring patterns, with color and texture, then worked to define and overlap this areas to break down the monotony of the long hallways.  The new layouts are bright and cheerful and improve accessibility and wayfinding.
