Toolontahti Park

Helsinki, Finland

Program: Large Outdoor Gathering, Spaces, Improved Circulation, Water Features
Area: Site Master Plan
Status:Competition 1997

This landscape architecture competition transformed an abandoned railroad yard in the heart of Helsinki into Toolonlahti Parks.  The design submission was based on two primary aesthetic features – a  selection of bold tree-lined, directionals that evolve into pedestrian esplanades and promenades, and a series of molded earthworks giving form to the primary outdoor events area and providing visual unity to the new parks, plaza and recreational sites.  The Phase I master plan proposes bridging over the tracks with parks and landscaping; Phase II embraces new commercial development while still maintaining essential rail services below.
